Fatal Notification 2026-06 Machinery Related (Crushed by Crop Sprayer)

Initial reports indicate a farmer was killed when he was crushed by a crop sprayer while disconnecting it from the back of a tractor.

Key Safety Messages:

  • Maintain all plant and equipment in good working order, following the manufacturer’s instructions at all times

  • Ensure all machinery operators are properly trained and competent

  • Always follow the Safe Stop procedure before approaching moving parts of starting maintenance:

    • Handbrake on

    • Controls in neutral

    • Engine switched off

    • Key removed

  • Only allow maintenance and adjustments to be carried out by individuals with the appropriate skills, knowledge and experience

  • Release any stored energy (e.g. from springs, hydraulics or compressed systems) before starting maintenance work

  • Secure any parts that could move or fall, and never work under equipment or loads unless they have been made safe

  • Implement clear procedures for reporting damaged or faulty equipment.
